Here it is a few days before Thanksgiving and I’m thinking about reasons to be thankful. These days while people are losing jobs and the economy turns sour, it’s easy to slip into negative feelings. I am familiar with the greatest way to stay optimistic, which is to wake up each morning and discover five reasons to be grateful.
That’s easy. Today I am thankful for:
1. my husband and daughter.
2. my health.
3. a day of sunshine like this morning and the beautiful sunset from the night before.
4. flowers still in bloom in the garden three days before Thanksgiving.
5. my greenhouse stuffed to overflowing with plants.
My gratitude list varies daily, although number one on the list remains constant. Awakening to sunshine streaming through the windowpanes is welcoming any morning, but especially in winter, when sunny days are elusive. Hard freezes not yet arrived means many plants hang on to life. The garlic leaves are poking up through the soil, which means some grand cooking is in store for next year. Romaine lettuce continues to grow in raised beds, means fresh leaves for dinner. The chickens present three to four eggs daily while being excellent composters and fertilizers for the garden. The garden harbors lushness even as winter approaches as we put up our new LED Christmas lights. We will light them after dinner on Thanksgiving.
I am grateful for the abundance in my life. Yes, life throws us some lemons, but I am alive, breathing and still gardening. Life is good.
