On a recent trip to Portland, Oregon, I took time to go shopping at a nursery. They had quite a few woven-bark hanging baskets planted with petunias and other common flowers. I loved the containers but detested the petunias. I’m sorry, but I have some long-term bias against this particular plant that I’ve never been able to get over. Besides, I like to pot up my own plants, which I start from seed or purchase willy-nilly to tuck into containers. Luckily, after I asked a few employees, they found two empty baskets in some hidden area. Score! I took the pots home and stuffed them with what I preferred. The unfortunate part about filling them to overflowing is soon the plants will drape down, looking lovely in their own right, but hiding the beautiful woven bark and shapes. Until then, I will continue enjoying the unusual conical hanging baskets every time I gaze out my window.
